The Little Grand Tour: introducing children to great art

The Little Grand Tour developed out of a love for the history of art and a commitment to introducing art to children.

We are a group of young, enthusiastic art tutors who want to make gallery visits interesting for children and to encourage them to develop an understanding of paintings and sculpture.

The Little Grand Tour makes museum and gallery visits an entertaining and informal experience and gives children an appreciation of seminal works of art.

One of the key aims of The Little Grand Tour is to teach children how to recognise the style and characteristics of different artists. It is our hope that this will enable a child to enter a gallery in future years and identify the works of art.

With groups no larger than eight, we strive to make the trips personal and interactive. A visit consists of focusing on two different artists, for example, Constable and Turner, or one genre, such as the Impressionists (where we concentrate on five paintings integral to that movement). Two LGT tutors lead a group, hold discussions, play games, and use worksheets to enhance the experience. At the end of a visit, children are encouraged to pick out four of their favourite paintings on postcards which will, hopefully, start up a postcard collection for later reference and interest.
